Alto Saxophone Beginner Lessons
This is a set of 10 lessons that will teach you the fundamentals of playing saxophone and reading music. I’ve used my years of experience playing, teaching and learning the saxophone to design this set of lessons in the best way to give you the solid fundamentals that will help you become a great player in no time.
No prior experience is necessary as I take you through a range of exercises starting from first principles to playing full pieces. Each video has an accompanying pdf for you to use for practise and is designed in small segments so you can dip in and out of each lesson. If you like using these videos please let me know if you’d like me to make more!
Each of the links below will take you to a playlist of videos where the scale is played at different speeds from slow to fast. Play along with the videos at slow speeds and gradually work your way up to the faster videos. Don’t go to the fast videos until you can play perfectly with the slow ones!
Each scale set below links to a playlist with the entire technical work syllabus for each grade at the correct speed required for the exam. If you can play through the entire list at speed from memory then you’re ready for your exam! If you have problems with any of the scales scroll down to that scale on this page and perfect it at slower speeds before trying again.
Scales in 3rds
Harmonic Minor Scales
Melodic Minor Scales
Below are links to videos with play-throughs of common AMEB pieces. Each link has a playlist with usually 3 different speeds. The fastest speed is the correct speed for the piece. Only try to play along with the fastest speed once you’ve mastered playing along at the slower speeds.
The videos linked below cover a wide range of topics for improving your playing. The beginner basics go through the first steps for students new to the saxophone while the tone and technique exercises look at different ways of improving the sound production and accuracy of intermediate players. These last tutorials also have PDFs with all of the exercises and explanation written out.
Books For Beginners
Below are links to videos with play-throughs of beginner books. Each one has a playlist of videos covering a range of pages of each book. Each page of the book has three video play-throughs at different speeds. Try to play along perfectly at the slower speeds before trying again at the faster speeds.
